Close to my body: Multisensory perspectives on peripersonal space

An interdisciplinary workshop

when 14th – 15th of May, 2013 where at the Institute of Philosophy, London

Perceptual experience is shaped by sensory perspective: first and foremost, we sense what immediately surrounds us. Sensory interactions are most dense in the processing of nearby events. These interactions have recently been found to occur in multiple combinations of modalities (visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive) in delimited regions centred upon parts of the body. Moreover, certain sensory interactions can affect how we identify ourselves, and shape our experience of our location and perspective.

This workshop aims to explore the interdisciplinary significance of these recent discoveries. Potential themes to be explored include: What is the nature of a multisensory perspective? How ought we to describe crossmodal spatial experience? In virtue of what is crossmodal spatial experience unified? To what extent are the represented boundaries of the subject shaped by sensory interaction? To what extent are multisensory representations of the body and surrounding space distinct?
